Starting school is an important step in a young child’s life and long before children reach kindergarten, parents and teachers wonder about school readiness. “Will my child be ready for school?” and “Are we doing enough?” are commonly asked questions, so how can you tell if your child is ready to start school?
Without more detailed information there is no definitive answer to those questions. Every child is unique, every situation needs to be evaluated in light of its own special features and circumstances. School readiness is a complicated issue that needs a simple solution.
It was with that in mind that we developed our own assessment screening. K-Shield Screening is a new developmental screening service that is extremely easy to access and highly effective in capturing children’s strengths and weaknesses, identifying those who can benefit from more intensive assessments addressing potential developmental difficulties/delays.
School readiness refers to whether a child is ready to make an easy and successful transition into school. The term ‘preschool readiness’ might be used in the same manner in reference to beginning preschool.
While many people think of academic skills, school readiness actually refers to a much broader range of skills that includes social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills. By providing children with these foundation skills, they will have the best opportunity to adjust to a school environment and reach their learning potential.
Children that begin school with the necessary skills in place advance quickly, opposed to those that start school and begin the slow process of developing school readiness.
